Its economy is based on the transformation and value-adding industry (Industrial City of Curitiba), trade, and rendering of services.

Society

Population formed and strongly influenced by various ethnics that established themselves here at the end of the 19th Century and in the beginning of the 20th. The major ethnic groups are: the Polish, Germans, Italians, Ukranianas, French, English, Dutch, and, in the beginning of the 20th Century: Japanese, Syrian-Lebanese, and Jews. Known as "University City", due to the high number of students it takes in, it is a city that followed the progress in a balanced form, which has in the inhabitants' well-being its main concern. Among many benefits, there is the preservation of large green areas for leisure. Its population is of  1,757,904 inhabitants and its green area corresponds to 51 m2 per inhabitant.

 
 

History

Curitiba emerged when the gold diggers, coming from the Coast, went up the rivers, through the Serra do Mar mountains, and reached the plateau. The first nucleus was established by Eleodoro Ébano Pereira, along the margins of the Atuba river, in a location known as Vilinha, which was later transferred to the current Tiradentes Square. In this place, Vila Nossa Senhora da Luz dos Pinhais, which was officially founded on March 29, 1693. In 1842, the Village was promoted to the category of City with the name of Curitiba and, on August 29, 1853 became the Capital of the State of Parana.
